The Guild of Arcane Arts

Buried among the winding back streets of Angleston, the Silent Halls was once a fine residence, its rambling passageways and chambers the domain of a respectable Elanii family. However, for the last eighty years it has been the guild hall for the Guild of Arcane Arts; a group of Wizards, Sorcerers and a few Bards who endeavor to cooperate and share their knowledge.

The guild has improved their hall over the years - the ground floor is now neatly plastered stone and the wooden upper floors have been refurbished and repaired. The roof is newly re-tiled.

The Guild of Arcane Arts is principally a trade guild. For a fee of 150 gp a month (or 1300 gp a year), members get the following benefits;

· Access to a members only bar called the Wizard's Attic. A good, widely recognized place to make contacts.

· Free use of a room in the Silent Halls if one is available. Food and drink is extra.

· Access to the guild's spell library and item traders. Members all have an account which they can pay into either with cash or by selling the guild their unwanted items and scrolls. As a special benefit the guild pays 60% of the market price of the item. Members can then pay for their purchases from the guild with their account. All standard items and scrolls are charged at 100% market price. The guild also automatically takes the member's dues from their account at the appropriate time.

· The guild's library is now quite extensive, and holds both books and scrolls. The charge for learning from a book is 80% of the price of a scroll of that spell.

· The guild's tradesman also has a good inventory, largely because a good proportion of the member's fees goes towards paying three agents to scour the local markets for useful items.

In addition to the membership fee, members do have a few other obligations to the guild. They are expected to circulate any newly discovered (or re-discovered) magical knowledge. This includes new spells, any rumors or clues to sites of potential interest, and so on.

Experienced members may also be expected to tutor more junior members from time to time. However, the Guild of Arcane Arts is principally an informal trading guild - it is not a fully fledged magical academy, or a political entity of any import. If it ever started to develop along these lines, the rulers of Angleston would almost certainly brand the guild as a threat.

The current guildmaster is Selwin, a human Wizard with some inclination towards political intrigue. Some guild members are worried that he is starting to move the guild on a course that will antagonize the rulers of the city.

The head librarian is Ingirun, a female dwarf, who is almost obsessive about cleanliness, order, and quiet in her library.

The quartermaster is Varden, a rather rotund, loud man who clearly enjoys his ale. That aside, he has an extensive knowledge of arcane objects and their worth.
